For Global Youth Service Day in 2009, PTPI's Kampala, Uganda (Angels of Humanity) Student Chapter visited with street children and brought them food. Later, they reflected on their experinces and vowed to continue their work with the street children. Chapter member Joan recalls her experience.

To Reach Out to the Needy: Today, 19th of April 2009, the PTPI Kampala, Uganda (Angels of Humanity) Student Chapter visited the Kisenyi slum, located on the outskirts of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. I personally got a chance to speak to Nicholas, who is 8 years old. He said he came from Kisumu, Kenya, a neighbouring country to Uganda. He lost both his parents and used to live with his aunt. He left Kenya with a friend who is about 16 years old but without his aunt’s notice. He has been on the streets of Uganda for a long time despite not knowing Luganda, the main local dialect. He is fluent in Swahili though. For a living, he sells empty bottles to Kisekka market and Owino market, both located in Kampala. The challenges he faces most are bullies within in the fellow street children, police that treats them brutally and the bad company of big boys who force them to sniff petrol. He looks forward to reuniting with his aunt, but his big problem is his older friend wants to go to Tanzania, a neighbouring country instead of Kenya.

"I was deeply touched by all the other children’s stories many of whom want to go to school. I also learned to appreciate whatever life provides for me because many people are worse off."
